Unwrapping

Unwrapping

Partner

Unwrapping is the third project of Packplay, research and creation workshops directed by Sylvain Allard, Graphic Design professor at the UQAM School of Design. Packplay projects stem from a partnership between the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ). This collaboration dates back to 2014, when Geneviève Dionne and Sylvain Allard met during the first edition of the project which took form as an exhibition and a publication on user experience. They later worked together on the second Packplay edition, which held an exhibition of student projects on packaging ecodesign during the World Design Summit at the Palais des Congrès in Montreal. They have also co-written and published Do We Really Need Another Package?

Unwrapping is the logical next step; it is Sylvain’s innate drive to meet every player working on packaging behind the scenes, directly or indirectly.

“After countless conversations and reflections over this third edition of Packplay, Sylvain and I were looking to shift gears. We both thought a documentary would widen our audience and increase awareness in terms of packaging, ecodesign and more importantly the role and importance of the design process. We wanted to present a more nuanced discussion surrounding packaging, which we love to hate despite needing it.”

“I wanted to see, observe, question what truly happens on the field, within the system, and I wanted to understand, as a designer, what consequences and solutions arise from decisions and choices in design. Our collaboration is to thank for bringing this project to life.”
